Amsterdam: Train Where Movement Is a Way of Life
Amsterdam is where endurance sports blend seamlessly with picturesque canals, lush green spaces, and the vibrant energy of a city designed for movement. Whether you’re training for your next triathlon, aiming for a personal best, or simply discovering the city through sport, Amsterdam presents an array of options to keep you motivated.

🏊♀️Indoor swimming pool (Year-Round)
A lovely 25m pool, offering day-pass with a reasonable price. It has clean bathrooms, hot showers, a swim clock to guide you, and a spacious deck to leave your belongings carelessly. I swam there twice during the afternoon hours, and it wasn’t crowded.

It has two pools with a daypass option, but a little more expansive: 25m indoor one, perfect for swimmers regarding water depth and swim clock. Many all-level swim teams train there, so it’s hard to find a lane to swim as well. It also features a 50m outdoor pool, but it is very crowded, and only half of the pool width is separated by lane lines, making it more challenging to swim.

🏊♀️Open Water (Seasonal)
Sloterplas
One of the most popular lakes in Amsterdam-West, featuring a sandy beach and ladders for easy entry—perfect for swimming laps.
Nieuwe Meer
Near Amsterdamse Bos, where nature offers a serene backdrop for your swims

Tip: Check local water quality updates before entering — Amsterdam does this well and transparently.
🏃 Running Tip- Parks & City Loops
Vondelpark
Boasts a popular 3.3 km loop, smooth paths, and constant movement. Ideal for easy runs, tempo efforts, or recovery days.
Oosterpark
Less crowded, more local. Great for relaxed runs with space to find your rhythm.

Long Run Escapes - Amstel River → Amsterdamse Bos
Follow the Amstel south and let the city slowly dissolve into nature. Flat, scenic, and perfect for long steady efforts where time disappears.
🚴Ride
A City Built for Cycling
With 500+ km of dedicated bike paths, Amsterdam isn’t just bike-friendly — it’s bike-first. Training here feels safe, fluid, and intuitive, even for visitors.
Long, Flat Adventure - Van Gogh Museum → Noordpiere (44 km one way)
A fast, flat route entirely on protected bike paths.
Includes a free ferry crossing between Spaarndam and Assendelft, adding a quiet moment of transition mid-ride. Perfect for endurance pacing and mental flow.

Interval & Power Work - Amsterdamse Bos → 7 km Loop
A compact loop surrounded by trees — ideal for intervals, threshold sets, or competitive group sessions.

Beyond Training
Valubale tips
-
Cashless Payments: Most places in Amsterdam only accept card payments.
-
Traffic Rules: Keep an eye on road signs and traffic regulations when cycling—riding on pavement is not allowed.
-
Secure Your Bike: Always lock your bike (even double-lock if possible) and never leave valuables on it.
-
Reserve Ahead: Book your accommodation and must-visit restaurants at least two weeks in advance to secure your spot.
-
Getting Around: Use the OV-chipkaart app to navigate public transport smoothly.

Solo Travel Tip: Want to make friends? Wear something orange! This is a fun nod to the Dutch enthusiasm known as oranjekoorts (orange fever) at sporting events.
-
Tourist Tax Update: Keep in mind that in 2024, Amsterdam's tourist tax has increased from 7% to 12.5%, making it the highest in Europe.
-
Join Local Communities:** Connect with local swim or running groups—many host “morning laps” or group sessions. Sites like Reddit and local clubs can be great resources, but even better: Share your sports trip desire in the Partner Up Europe section and find someone to exercise with!
